Growing Up Italian by Sara Valentino

ARTIST NOTES: This print is an ode to my Italian family and upbringing: the family gatherings and the moments of connection through food and rituals. Each image has a colour highlight that brings focus to these moments: the green bottles of ‘vino’, the spaghetti, which was a staple growing up, and the warm hand that connects and creates.

ARTIST BIO

I have been a visual arts educator for over 40 years. Now working part time, I am is able to dedicate more time to building my artistic practice as a printmaking artist.

As a first generation Italian Australian, there is a strong pull and connection to my roots: Italian, and more generally European, themes are evident as is my love of architecture and the linear qualities that this presents for my particular style of imagery.

My artwork consists mainly of original limited edition lino prints based on images and drawings of places I've been to, people I've met and the connections that I make. My work has been described as abstract realism. I really like to think of my work as my reaction to, and interpretation of, those places that I've visited, the spaces I've connected with and the personal connections I've made along the way. Connection is key in my work.

I use drawings and photographs, often manipulated in photoshop to reduce the tonal values. My work displays a linear graphic style and it’s fair to say that my ‘signature’ is the addition of a ‘pop’ of colour to make sure a particular icon, landmark or other object is instantly recognisable.

I love the process of linocut printing: carving the block is cathartic and revealing the print is exciting!
